Alibris: Your Next Chapter Starts Here

A few months ago, while clearing the living room for new carpeting, we spent an afternoon sorting through our bookshelves. I ended up donating enough books to fill the back of my Jeep Compass – a process that felt bittersweet, but ultimately freeing.

As I boxed up books to drop off at the local Goodwill, I couldn’t help thinking about just how much money I’ve spent on books over the decades. I love to read, and while I certainly don’t regret the hours I’ve spent immersed in a well-written book, I couldn’t help wondering how much money I might have saved if I’d discovered Alibris sooner.

Alibris is an online marketplace where you can purchase new and used books, often for a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere. I’ve purchased books for just a few dollars that would have cost considerably more had I bought them new. Extra savings are offered if you purchase at certain dollar thresholds and often free shipping is offered.

One of the things I appreciate most about Alibris is that you know what you’re getting before you buy. Each listing includes a description of the book’s condition, allowing you to decide just how particular you want to be. If you’re looking for a pristine copy to give as a gift, you can shop accordingly. If you’re like me and simply want a good book to read, perhaps a slightly worn cover or a creased spine isn’t going to bother you, especially if the price is right.

Another feature I appreciate is that Alibris tells you where the book will be shipped from and provides ratings for the individual sellers.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, not every purchase has been perfect.

I’ve had two disappointing experiences. The first involved a book advertised as being in good condition that arrived with handwritten notes and highlighting throughout (definitely not as described).

The second was a children’s book listed in excellent condition that I had intended to give as a gift. Unfortunately, when it arrived, I discovered crayon scribblings on several pages. While I can certainly appreciate a budding young artist, I wasn’t shopping for an illustrated collaboration.

I left negative reviews for both on the Alibris site.

Those two experiences aside, I’ve been overwhelmingly pleased with my purchases. And just as importantly, I’ve been very satisfied with Alibris’customer service when something hasn’t met my expectations.

I may never know exactly how much money I’ve spent on new books over my lifetime (in the 1990s I was obsessed with trips to Barnes & Noble), and perhaps that’s a figure best left unexplored. However, thanks to Alibris, the next chapter of my reading life is going to put less of a hurt on my budget.
